Is Winter A Good Time To Sell A House?

The “slow” months for real estate are here!

Winter will officially begin in our part of California on December 21, 2022. We all have noticed lower temperatures and an end-of-year mood and decorations.

We tend to think Winter is a slow season for real estate sales. But a tight inventory of homes across the country, especially in California, has changed market trends. And there are some reasons why listing a home during Winter might be a good strategy for sellers.

Homebuyers who brave the elements and take time out of seasonal celebrations to visit homes and initiate negotiations are much more determined than buyers in other seasons. In addition, many are reacting to unexpected life changes, such as relocation. As a result, they are willing to go the extra mile to buy a home.

You can sell if you adapt

Homeowners can make a few adjustments to make their homes more welcoming and attractive for Winter homebuyers.  These are simple yet powerful.

  1. Keep seasonal decorations sparse, or considering not decorating for as long as your selling process lasts. Buyers want to imagine how they could use the spaces you are trying to sell, and decorations make that more difficult.
  2. Make your home as cozy and warm as possible. And that includes all the rooms; if you have faulty sealing or poor insulation, correct that before you open your home for visits.
  3. Keep your home well-lighted, inside and out. Consider changing a few light bulbs to new LEDs to give the main rooms a more natural Spring-like lighting.
  4. Use all technology’s visual improvement products in your digital real estate marketing. You can turn not-so-green grass into a very attractive lawn or turn a sad winter sky into a dramatic summer twilight.
